Problem with Upgrading TSM 6.3.1 server to 6.3.4

I'm having issue's with upgrading my TSM server to 6.3.4. During the upgrade process, the DE is failing with the following error:

Deployment Engine failed to initialize.
ACUINI0084W Deployment Engine registration was not successful. The IU Registry
is not updated with current Deployment Engine descriptor information.
The installer will now shutdown. Please check with the log files for a more
complete description of the failure.


When I'm running the precheck command, no problems are detected.

Moving a Lanfree server(client node) to new TSM 6.3.3 backup server

I have a windows 2008 server (node), lanfree running 5.5.0.3 storage agent, need to move to start backing up on newly set up TSM 6.3.3 backup server(windows 2008). not sure of steps needed to make the move.
Do I uninstall BA client and storage agent, then re-install for backing up to new TSM server? is there an IBM doc on this procedure or just some basic steps to take would be great. We only have one lanfree client right now so I just don't deal with this aspect very much.

TSM don't request 'scratch' tapes

Hello everyone,

We have in our company tsm server 6 with an IBM TS3100 tape library. The company that installed it, make some scripts that allow us to see which tapes should be removed or inserted in the library, but don't work properly.

In the TSM Console, I know the command "Q REQ" that I think you should show the required tapes. Is it right? Are there any other command to show me the tape that requires TSM?

Hi All!

I Need an expert advise.
Here is my situation: One TSM server is connected to two geographically spread libraries via FC. One library is used for Primary storage pool and the remote library is used as Copy Storage pool.
On the primary storage library two of the four drives stopped working one after another in couple of days.
The call for IBM support is already made but I wonder what if the rest of the drives go down till the other two are fixed ? what is the course of action in such a situation ? How do I change the primary storage pool so that the second library (which is now used for copy storage pool) is used for daily backup operations?

Backing offline VM - API return code : 3

Hi, we have just recently decided to backup our template and since TSM is not able to back them up(even if they claim so) we converted them to offline VM to be able to backup. Trying to do the backup off this offline VMware virtual machine that we use as our cloning template, I get this error in the dsmerror.log file that I can't find any information about:

Multiple servers under the same Node Name

Hello,

I have a two machine cluster running QMAIL in an active/passive setup. I have configured the two machines with the same node name and they are able to backup/restore to the same database.

I recently introduced a third node and have set it up the same as the other two. On the new (3rd) node I am able to see the files that are backed up on the other two servers. Unfortunately, if I create a file on the third node and do a 'dsmc incre <filename>', I am unable to view or restore the file on the other two nodes. Can anyone provide some insight as to why this happens?

The initial setup was done by another administrator who is no longer around. There is no proxynode configuration.

BMR with WinPE - Error in ASR Restore

Hello,

we´ve implemented TSM in our Company and backup works well so far. It´s good to have backups, but it´s even better to have a working restore plan...
So I tried to follow the „bare metal restore plan“ from IBM
this one (https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/c...ows%20Vista“)
The plan to restore from a WinPE CD sounds good so far, so I created a PE-CD with WAIK 3.1 and „Winbuilder“ to have some GUI.
I followed the article to implement TSM Client (Version used 6.4.0.6) for PE and it works well so far for command-line (That´s enough for me…) We try to restore a Windows 2003 R2 Server for testing to see if it works. The source (backup) is a file-backup from a vmware virtual machine and we try to restore to a complete new virtual machine with the same disks configured.

Connecting to TSM-Server and restore of Volumes works so far, but we have a Problem with restoring the systemstate / ASR:

On the command-line I can see that some Files are restored to \\minint\x$\Windows\Temp\~adsm.sys ...

Because of the Restore of ASR fails the partitions are not restored as it should be what IBM mentions in Point 10 of the manual

"During the first part of the system state restore, ASR creates and formats critical partitions for the computer. A critical partition is the partition that is critical for the operating system to function."

I think a bare metal restore in this szenario should be possible...
I know I can do a DR-restore with VMDK-Backup, but we also would have the ability to do a bare-metal restore without installing the OS, installing the TSM-Client and then restore...

Does anyone know what´s going wrong there or has experienced the same Issue? Your help will be really appreciated

Domino TSM - NSF restore failed

Hi

I have a problem with restoration of NSF database - I got ANS1314E (rc14) error.
I did some investigation - I can say there are no missing/corrupted tapes.
When I am doing:

select object_id,BACKUP_DATE from backups where node_name='MAIL' and ll_name='USERNAME.NSF' order by BACKUP_DATE

I get about 15 objects - that is fine, but subsequently when I try this:

show bfo 0 593341947
Bitfile Object: 593341947
Inactive
Bitfile Object NOT found.

What is interesting when I do (note the DATA suffix)

select object_id,BACKUP_DATE from backups where node_name='MAIL' and ll_name='USERNAME.NSF.DATA' order by BACKUP_DATE

I am getting also 15 objects but these return (when running 'show bfo 0' command) their proper attributes (including size and volume where they are located).

I am new to domino for TSM so I do not know if it is all right.

Chances are that we somehow damaged the TSM database when we did a backup with "exclude all files" setting in opt file by mistake so probably a policy for "removed" files were applied.

Overall, I am confused with situation and would be thankfull for any kind of help/guidance

Connection between Incremental backup and restore

Dear Team,

I need to know how different type of backups affect Restore.

For Example,

In Client A i have configured daily incremental backup, it means that only the changed files will be backed up and unchanged files will not be replaced in backed up data.

The question is when i try to restore full drive, our backup admin says go to last full backup and then try to restore the full drive. Why is that ? I dont get it ? incremental backup is only there to save space in backup storage by not backing up unchanged data but anyways all data's will be there in storage pool.

1. why cant i restore from last incremental backup since it has nothing to do with Full Restore as the full data is available in storage .

2. why should i go to last full backup to restore in case of full restore ?

Reducing size of TSM Active Log

Hi,


I am using TSM Server 6.3 running in AIX6.1....

During TSM installation ( around 4 months back ) , i had kept my activity log size as 15GB. While checking the utilization today, i could find that only 168MB is used. Is there any way to reduce the activity log size to around 10G...

I have a log mirror too.... So totally, i can save around 10GB....

While going through documents, i could see only steps to increase the activity log size and not to reduce the size...

1) Can i follow the same steps to reduce the size too...
2) Is there any issue if i reduce the log size to 10GB

Mirroring a TSM v6.3.3 Database

Hi

I have two TSM v6.3.3 servers.

One at a production site, and the other at a DR site.

My customer currently uses MetroMirror to synchronously create an image of critical data from the production site to the DR site.
In the event of DR, they want to avoid the process of restoring the TSM database from the offsite tapes. ( I have explained to them that this does not get away from restoring the client data from tapes)

Is it possible to MetroMirror the TSM server database, active and archive logs to the DR site and then start the TSM server pointing to the mirror files?

Large Database SAP/Oracle in a VM

Hi!

Our company is evaluating to swtich its SAP-Servers to ESX.
My Problem with that: Backing up Large Databases with > 1TB LanFree is not supported.

Does anyone outhere have huge SAP Servers running as VMs!?
If so: How do you backup them (online)?

Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure what I'm looking for isn't possible with TSM, but I'm still going to ask it anyway :)

I use a "backup diskpool copypool" command in my maintenance plan to move the backup data offsite. The diskpool needs to be split up in 2 parts, 1 diskpool which backs up to the copypool and 1 diskpool which doesn't backup to the copy pool. The thing is, I don't have enough free disk space left on the server to create the necessary volumes for this new diskpool and move the data around.

That's when I started wondering if it's possible to adjust the backup command so that it excludes (a) specific client node(s)' backup data? This is what I currently have and where I'd like to go to:
