Hi everyone,
I know this process was surely covered time and time again but i just want to double check i get the procedure considering my current setup. I just received four new LTO-6 drives and tapes, tapes to which i must copy all our LTO-3 tapes. Here is the current setup:
- TSM 7.1.1
- IBM TS3310 library with an expansion (max 6 drives)
- 3 LTO-3 FC drives
- One onsite tape pool, one offsite tape pool, one offsite archive tape pool
- two devclass for tape (lto_clas and lto_class_off)
- two disk pools, one for backup to disk and one for archive to disk
Basics first:
I plan on removing 2 of the LTO-3 drives and replacing it with 2 of my LTO-6 drives + one drive. This way i will have one lto3 and one lto6 drive dedicated to moving data and two other tlo6 drives for TSM related maintenance.
Configure Fabric zoning
Installing driver on TSM server
Updating drives firmware if needed
Now for the TSM part:
Define a devclass for LTO6 onsite (Define DEVClass LTO6_CLASS LIBRary=LIB_0 DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM6C)
Define a devclass for LTO6 offsite (Define DEVClass LTO6_CLASS_OFF LIBRary=LIB_0 DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM6C)
Update devclass for LTO3 onsite (update DEVClass LTO_CLASS LIBRary=LIB_0 DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM3C)
Update devclass for LTO3 offsite (update DEVClass LTO_CLASS_OFF LIBRary=LIB_0 DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM3C)
Remove the two LTO-3 drives from TSM
Add the three lto-6 drives to TSM
Make all the lto-3 tapes readonly so nothing writes to them
Rename onsite tape pool to _old
Create new onsite tape pool with devclass lto6
Configure next pool to new lto6 onsite pool
Rename offsite tape pool to _old
Create new offsite tape pool with devclass lto6
Configure next pool to new lto6 offsite pool
Rename offsite archive tape pool to _old
Create new offsite archive tape pool with devclass lto6
Configure next pool to new lto6 offsite arch pool
Configure new lto-6 pools as next for disk pools
Now for the fun part. Which way is better: moving the data using the "move data" command volume by volume or using the migrate command for the whole lot? Our TS3310 is almost at maximum capacity so i have to free physical space rather quickly.
Does this sound right? Am i forgetting something?
Regards
Jeff
