Adding An Appliance As A StoragePool

Hi

TSM Server v6.2.3
Running on AIX

We have two existing Data Domain DD660's with 24tb of storage in each - one in a primary location replicating to the other at a DR location. Both devices are almost full, and no additional storage can be added

so the plan is:

Install a new DD860 at the primary site, providing additional capacity

Move the data from the DD660 at the primary site to the new DD860. Not sure how best to achieve this

Move the (now empty) primary DD660 to the DR site

To free more space on the DD device currently at the DR site, run a 'move nodedata' command to move some legacy data to LTO media

At the DR site, set up the two DD660's as distinct storage pools. One to do SAP/DB2 backups, the other doing filesystem and Oracle backups. Alternatively, could both devices be represented as a single stgpool?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/comments

Tivoli Integrated Portal Question

Hi

TSM v6.3.3
Running on AIX 7.1

Having installed the TSM server, when i install the administration centre, is it at all possible to have the TIP running on a VM?

At the moment, the v6.2 TSM server running on a P6 AIX server has the admin centre/TIP running, but the TIP performance is poor and very very slow. I am told they are seeing high CPU consumption by the TIP hence the request 'can the TIP run on a VM'?

Problems with making Scratch Tapes

We have taken a TSM instance shut down. Now we want to use the tapes on which the database backups are as scratch tapes. These tapes are still available in the Library (I/O Station). At the command "label libvolume ibm3584 CHECKIN = SCRATCH SEARCH = Bulk Label Source Code = overwrite = yes".
We always get the error message "ANR8816E LABEL LIBVOLUME. Volume 081080 in library IBM3584 can not be labeled because it is currently defined in a storage pool or in the volume history file".
Since the TSM instance to which the tapes belongs, is not longer existing, so I can not remove them from the storage pool.
Is there another way to transform these DB Tapes to Scratch Tapes ?

Temporary DC replace

Hi All,

My company have 2 Data Center locations: primary and recovery
TSM is clustered (active/passive) in both locations with seperate tape library and disk array.

Now we are about to move primary location to new data center and here is the question. I want to temporary make this recovery center with TSM a primary one and back up all data there. After we move all HW to new location, I want to switch it back. Can anyone write me some steps/ideas how to do it?

The way I see it is to switch TSM instance to RDC, set all primary stg pools unavaiable, back up the data to copy pools and after we move the HW, synchronize somehow copy pools with primary pools...

Kind Regards
Dave

I have a SQL Server db backup taken by Tivoli TDP SQL version 5.5 and would like to restore it onto a different server which has TDP SQL version 6.3 installed.
Are these 2 versions compatible for cross db restores?

Expiration not expiring inactive files

AIX OS Level - 5.3.0.0 TSM level 5.5.5.0

We are experiencing an issue with expiration at our location. We have been running expiration over the last week and have not seen any amount of backup or archive files deleted.

This is a common output for expiration:

Expiration Examined 79864403 objects, deleting 0 backup
objects, 816 archive objects, 0 DB backup
volumes, 0 recovery plan files; 0 errors encountered.

We have let expiration run for extensive periods of time, once to over 800,000,000 examined files, with 0 backup files deleted and just a few thousand archive files deleted. From what I know about expiration is that it will only examine the inactive files and not the total number of files that is listed in the DB. When a backup runs on a certain node it marks files that have surpassed their retention times and marks the files "deactive_date" as "1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000". Then when expiration runs, expiration looks for this date and then removes the inactive file. Now when we run expiration to over 800,000,000 objects examined it is hard to believe that there are no backup files to remove.

Here is an example of one node with retention times (only few lines shown - all directories are the same)
NODE_NAME PLATFORM_NAME FILESPACE_NAME VEREXISTS VERDELETED RETEXTRA RETONLY VERSION

J201M257 WinNT \\j201m257\d$ 28 28 30 60 6.2.3.0

Here is 3 file examples that I would expect to be removed with expiration

I really have 2 questions:

Why is expiration not removing these files and what else can I look at to see why they are not expiring?

How can I manually remove all these inactive files with a deactive_date of 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi all,

It is a very small server and it backing up around 120 client servers on it. Backups are running very slow on the server. Under q session I can see byte received in KB's.. It is an intermittent issue. 1 day all the backups completes within the time and next day I can see around 50 clients are still running even during the production hours. Can some one please help me out on this...

Your inputs/comments are highly appreciable.

Can you prevent TSM clients from writing directly to tape?

$

Is there a way to prevent a client from bypassing the diskpool and writing directly to tape? I would prefer that my TDP clients not directly mount a tape. For some reason my TDP clients occasionally skip the diskpool and suck up a tape drive. There appears (to me) that there is enough space in diskpool.

Is there any way to see the communication between the TDP client and TSM when they are determining how much data it is sending up and how much space is available in the diskpool?
