Cannot restore old backups - File truncated

I have a problem restoring some old backups (using TDP for Domino, obviously) that were done in December 2010. Whichever NSF database I try to restore, it fails with this client side message:

Code:

File truncated - file may have been damaged
ACD5702E A Domino API error has occurred.

On server side, the message is:
Code:

06/13/2014 11:23:09      ANR8213E Socket 7 aborted due to send error; error 104.                          (SESSION: 37474)

The result of 'query dbbackup' also looks strange:

Note the last line, corresponding to the backup from which I cannot restore. The database size is clearly wrong and title is missing. This leads me to believe that this is not a media defect, but something else. A corruption of TSM database? Some kind of incompatibility between versions of Domino or TSM that was in use back then and today?

My records indicate that I performed a successful restore of this backup in November 2011.
Today I can successfully restore a backup made on 12/29/2011 (third one from bottom in the query output above). Haven't yet tried 07/01/2011, but I suspect this will also succeed.

At the time the backup was taken I was running:
TSM server 6.2.1
Domino server 8.0.2 FP6 (32bit)
TSM/TDP client on the Domino server: 6.2.1/5.5.2

Today:
TSM server 6.2.5
Domino server 9.0.1 FP1 64bit
TSM/TDP client on the Domino server: 7.1.0

Both client and server are Linux.

Hello Every one,

I came to a new invironment which have already TSM installed, but not taking any new backups, instead they are configuring EMC backup to replace TSM, or in another word, to take new backups.
The case that they want to keep the TSM ONLY for old backups and archives, which means it have to be up and running normally.. and have the EMC for new operation of backing up all data.

only one tape library with multiple drives is available. i believe that it is not right to manage 1 tape library with 2 backyup solutions? am i right? any similar experience?

Good morning friends,

I have a tape that was used in ancient TSM of company work. The problem is .... the database from the old TSM was lost and we are unable to restore what is on the tape.

Is there any program that restores all the information that is on this tape? In ARCserve just do the 'MERGE' tape he plays Tape information in the database, the TSM is there any way to do this?

From already thank you very much for the attention my friends.

Unable to force media reuse

$

Hi All,

The situation:
The tape library is full, but is low on scratch tapes. This is circumvented by active tapes being checked out & placed in onsite storage. This is tracked in TSM using Move Media.
There are 4 onsite volumes that have no active data and are in pending state. Normally the volumes would be be reclaimed by performing a delete vol.
Unfortunately the delete vol fails with: ANR1425W Scratch volume TAPE001 is empty but will not be deleted - volume state is "mountablenotinlib".
I am unable to perform a move media on the tape as move media only applies to full filling or empty volumes.

The Question:
I know I can expire the media quicker by changing the reuse delay of the storage pool, but is there another way of overriding the system?

Media details below if it is of any gain/interest.

Thank you in advance.

TSM and Storage Pools + VTL

We are currently building a new TSM environment. One of the questions poised is can you put your storage pools on a virtual tape library. I will elaborate. The main storage pool would be on the VTL and then are backup copy pools would also be on the VTL. I have looked into this with no success. Can someone direct me to a site or give me a answer as to why or why not. All logs and database will be on a NFSmount to a SAN.

Backups on disk to tape

I want to send backups that are on disk to tape, so I created the tape library and assign the path to library and drives (it has two), then I've labeled a tape, not sure if it's right, created the device class and storage pool. So when I put the tape as next storage pool and start the migration process nothing happens, so I missing something, something I left behind?

Issue about data deduplication with protection against data lost

$

Hi,

We're running TSM server version 6.2, level 5.0 on AIX 7.1 (7100-00-02-1041).
Clients: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
TSM client version: Backup/archive version 7, release 1, level 0.2.

DedupRequiresBackup: Yes
Server-side and client-side data duplication enabled.

According to the manual "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX: Administrator's Guide" (Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX V 6.2):

"Client-side data deduplication has a possible disadvantage. The server does not
have whole copies of client files until you back up the primary storage pools that
contain client extents to a non-deduplicated copy storage pool. (Extents are parts of
a file that are created during the data-deduplication process.) During storage pool
backup to non-deduplicated storage pool, client extents are reassembled into
contiguous files.

Server-side data deduplication offers more protection against data loss. By default,
primary sequential-access storage pools that are set up for data deduplication must
be backed up to non-deduplicated copy storage pools before they can be reclaimed
and before duplicate data can be removed. The default ensures that the server has
copies of whole files at all times, in either a primary storage pool or a copy storage
pool."

And acording to this source http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...resbackup.html about DEDUPREQUIRESBACKUP server option:

"The DEDUPREQUIRESBACKUP option specifies whether volumes in primary sequential-access storage pools that are set up for deduplication can be reclaimed and whether duplicate data can be discarded before the storage pools are backed up.
If the value of this option is YES (the default), you must back up data to copy storage pools that are not set up for deduplication. Use the BACKUP STGPOOL command to back up data to copy storage pools.Be aware that reclamation of a volume in a storage pool that is set up for deduplication might not occur when the volume first becomes eligible. The server makes additional checks to ensure that data from a storage pool that is set up for deduplication has been backed up to a copy storage pool. These checks require more than one BACKUP STGPOOL instance before the server reclaims a volume. After the server verifies that the data was backed up, the volume is reclaimed.
You can change this option dynamically using the SETOPT command.
Attention: To minimize the possibility of data loss, do not change the default setting for this server option. Specify a value of NO only if you do not have any copy storage pools and are not performing storage pool backups."

Some questions:

a) Do we really need to backup data from the primary sequential-access storage pool to copy storage pools that are NOT set up for deduplication? What are the consequences of not doing that?
b) Does the backup from the primary sequential-access storage pool to a (remote) single copy storage pool deduplicated replace the protection against the data lost? Assume (i) primary product server or data center damage and (ii) data integrity errors. Are the risks same for server-side and cliente-side data deduplication?
c) Why the backup of a primary storage pool to a copy storage pool that is set up for data deduplication remove duplicate data?

Thanks,

mahalik

TSM 7.1 implementation test bugs

Hey

Anyone done 7.1 implementation? http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/ovrC2010-511.shtml

I passed it on Tuesday and IMO there were four questions that were not complete. Those had the question, answers but not the premise for the question. Anyone else noticed the same?

I'd been pretty pissed if the result had been closed fail, but even so I informed the testing facility about the problem and they'll pass it on.

BTW anyone know when 7.1 administartion cert will be availablle, might do that as well.

Datamover registration fails

Hey all. New to TSM/large data backups in general.

I recently installed a few tape arrays, an AIX server with TSM, a couple of Dell 7610's with Fluid FS, and 4 Dell 6510 Equallogic disk storage arrays. We have about 200 TB of large data files to backup.

The problem I'm having is that datamover registration fails after TSM receives the backup type information. A packet capture and the logs confirm that TSM and NDMPD exchange authentication, which passes, server information, host information, and backup type information then TSM reports that registration fails.

Since the TSM disconnects immediately after receiving the backup type info I assume that the packet contains incomplete information. Below is the NDMPD logs which outlines the information passed to the TSM before the TSM closes the connection.

Backupsets by Nodegroup Culling

Hello All,

We have a group of nodes that have been using backupsets for archives - by nodegroup. I want to delete a single node's backupset to remove the node but this is the same backupset as the other nodes in the nodegroup are associated with. I wonder if I can delete the backupset by node (the backupset tapes are offline) while preserving the same backupset definition for the other nodes in the nodegroup thus allowing me to remove the dead node.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks,
Kevin

[HOWTO] Mixed tape library (yeah, yeah, I know)

$

I KNOW the best way to handle this is 2 logical libraries, but that's not possible right now.

3584 library with LTO3 and LTO4 drives.

Device classes are set up with FORMAT=ULTRIUMnC (n=3,4)

The problem I that LTO3 cartridges still gets loaded into LTO4 drives. I know why, since 4s can read/write 3s, but I want to try to prevent this. I figure that if I delete all of the drives and the redefine them by first defining the LTO3, the 4s will always bypass them, but since these would be first on the list, the 3s will always end up in these drives.

Thoughts?

Hello ,

I'm facing the problem I have not seen that before on any of my TSM enviroment
It's regarding TDP for MS Exchange.

Where to find cause of this error? Is it on TSM Client or on MS Exchange configuration ?
I would really really appreciated for your help .

select sum(BYTES/1099511627776) as "TB's Monthly Report" from SUMMARY where ACTIVITY='BACKUP' and start_time between '2014-05-01 19:00:00.000000' and '2014-05-31 21:00:00.000000'
