Unix Client/node missing

Hi,

Node was backup fine until last week, but now started missing.
Node OS is Linux and has multiple IPs.
By checking

>q node aaa f=d

TCP/IP 10.10.2.10

but in dsm.sys

tcpclientaddress 10.10.2.125

I don't know from where client is getting this ip, I have deleted this IP from server, than TSM is picking another server ip but not tcpclientaddress ip.

Check event log, there was nothing but I noticed running

>dsmc

from client, Its not connecting just hanging and have to press ctrl+c, but no error is coming,

Any help will be appreciated, restarted too many times dsmcad, by checking log two files are creating dsmerror and dsmwebcli but dsmsched is not creating.

tsm4ve 7.1 schedule

$

Wasn't sure where to post this since there doesn't seem to be a tsm4ve heading.

First based on my previous statement is tsm4ve worth using or does it seem to cause more problems than good?

I'm using the 7.1.01 package on a windows server 2008R2 server.
I have a situation where I had to delete a datamover node because the services were messed up and it was easier to delete it than fix the services. Then the schedule that was associated with the datamover node started to error so I deleted and tried to recreate it. When I recreate it (same name) I get a schedule already exists error. Now I know I can just change the name etc. etc. but the schedule doesn't show up under the gui and I can't seem to find a cli guide for the ve client. Anyone able to offer some input as to how to get rid of the schedule or if it's not hurting anything? I'm just trying to keep things clean and working as expected.

Restore Logging

Hello,

Is there a way to monitor/restrict or log admins who restore with regards to sensitive data? Let's say the mayor's office has some sensitive files. How do we restrict restore access to that data from the admin pool?

Thanks.

Windows Cluster Backup Frustration!!

$

Hello all,

We have two Windows 2K12 servers in a cluster. There's one cluster disk, "H", that moves between the two randomly. Someday's it's mounted to serverA and someday's to serverB. The server that it's NOT mounted to, misses it's backup and in-fact, it won't even start the TSM Scheduler service ("ANS1480E CLUSTERNODE is set to YES but the cluster service is not enabled on this system"). I've tried just backing-up the server like normal and setting it to "CLUSTERNODE=NO" and grabbing all the drives, but nope, it knows that it's a "cluster drive". How am I supposed to make this work? They only care about this cluster drive, not even "C". Any thoughts?

snapdiff on a snapmirror destination volume

TSM supports the snapdiff method on snapmirror destination filers. I plan to put this in place, with TSM version 7.1 client and server, and DOT 8.2
Pete Tanenhaus has advised to periodically backup with the CREATENEWBASE option, to recapture changes in the inclexcl list.

I take it that I will be unable to use the CREATENEWBASE option on the Snapmirror destination filer, as it is readonly.
Instead, should I do a progression incremental without the -snapdiff option ?

Restore from filelist to a different location

$

I would like to restore files that I have entered into a text file and have them restored first to a different location and then upon success with that restore them to the original location, I have the command "reading" the text file and getting the list but I can't seem to get the syntax right for where to put them and I keep getting an error message that says "ANS1084E no files have previously been backed up for <filespec> or the specified file space is invalid for the current operation. So, my questions is "What is the proper syntax to restore from a filelist to an alternate location? What I have issuing is "c:\dsmc restore -filelist=c:\temp\RestoreListTest.txt \\<servername>\D$\<Folder to restore to>" any help?

TSM as single point of failure in productive environments - transactional logging

$

Hey guys,

I'd really like some input on this and how you do this. Now what I have here seems like a pretty standard thing - we have our Hyper-V environment on a SAN storage hosting our productive services. Also we have a TSM server with storage, a tape library and so on. So naturally, we save the data from our productive clients to said TSM server. That includes database backups. Since we need to be able to to up-to-the-minute and point-in-time restores we naturally use log archival and this have the various TDP products backup the database logs.

Now consider this - the TSM server horribly fails, of course this happens when nobody is around and thus nobody can act for a few days (holiday season, whatever). What will happen is that the logs cannot be backed up and will pile up on the database servers disks - until the disks are full and the databases come to a grinding halt.

What is a practical way not to have this happen?

Of course, one way would be to make the TMS Server itself highly available. Which however means that no server can directly be attached to a tape drive anymore, we would have to have a library server. And I'm not sure of the performance we can expect from this. And of course this requires a significant investment, since we either need to expand our SAN to have the backup data stored on it or need another SAN just for the TSM servers. Ay!

I was really hoping for TSM "two-way-replication". As in there are Servers A and B and A replicates node data to B. When A fails nodes can restore AND backup to B and when A comes back B will replicate the differences to A. This would (to me) be an ideal solution but no, TSM can't do it.

How have you guys set this up?

Problems with restore time in connection with an VTL

$

We use since a couple of months a Fujitsu Eternus CS (VTL) together with TSM 6.3.
We use virtual tapes with a size of 20 GB. Behind the Eternus CS is a Quantum i6K on which the data is backed up, when the data are displaced by the 20 GB virtual tapes.
When restoring the data will be loaded from the physical tape back on the 20 GB virtual tapes. This can take a long time, for example, if the data resides on a server 100 virtual tapes. Currently our environment restores only a few MB per hour.
We don't have "Collocation" function switched on from the beginning.
My questions: Is there a way to speed up the restore by TSM? Is it possible "Collocation" to activate on the fly, how does that look like?

How to have offsite copies with longer retention period

$

All,

Using TSM and a VTL and tapes, it is possible to configure TSM such that we have x number of days (say 30) of backups onsite on the VTL and y (say 60 days) retained on offsite tapes? The idea would be to write to the VTL during the nightly backups and then have those backups written to tape during the day for an offsite DR copy. We'd want retain the offsite tape backups longer than the onsite VTL backups since our onsite VTL does not have the space to store as many days as we need overall. The idea being, for the first 30 days we have readily available backups on the onsite VTL, but are protected by the offiste backup in two ways - 1) disaster onsite and 2) longer overall retention period.

Thanks!

Anyone know of any issues upgrading Server 6.2.3 to 7.1 on AIX?

$

We'll be upgrading our Server 6.2.3 to 7.1 this weekend and are looking for any gotcha's ahead of time. We already upgraded AIX to 7.1 TL1-SP6 (7100-01-06-1241) a few weeks ago and have rebooted/restarted without any apparent issues. This will be the first time we've upgraded in-place and are a bit nervous, in the past we'd always thrown-up a newer/better server and just installed the new version. Any thoughts or feelings on it? thanks as always everyone!
