Not Detecting new tapes

$

Our library (spectra t380) initially had 200 tapes in it (100-299), recently the initial 200 tapes were removed through the library interface, and another 300 (300-599) tapes were loaded into the system. When we look at the tapes in the system, only the last 100 (500-599) of the new tapes and the initial 200 tapes (100-299) show.

How do I fix this so that the 200 other new tapes show now? I tried doing an audit, but that did not help.

Guys, is there a way one can retrieve only the result of a select without all the tsm client info ? What i would like is to drop these lines from the output of the command...

Tsm4ve v6.4.0.2 ans1236e rc115

I just installed the TSM4VE V6.4.0.2 on a VM Backup server and the first VM they asked me to back up is 9.3 TB in size. It is a file server. Needless to say it fails on the ANS1236E RC115 and there is nothing in the event logs of either the backup server or the VM they asked me to back up. Is there some sort of size limitation regarding the back up of a large VM like this? I have not seen anything in my searches so far.
Any one aware of this or should I just open a ticket with IBM?

Solaris 10.
User ID = tsminst1

I'm doing a test upgrade of my v5.5 server to 6.3. Upgrade is good and the server will start by certain methods...

As user "tsminst1" I can start the TSM server from my instance directory:
cd /tsm/tsminst1

As user "root" I cannot start the TSM server from rc.dsmserv script:

Yes, I can probably get lots of permissions changed to run under user "tsminst1", but is that what I need to be doing?
Or do I run rc.dsmserv as root? If so, what is causing the memory errors that I don't get when running "dsmserv" (not rc.dsmserv script)?

relation between NSF and NSF.DATA

$

Hi,

So far I have failed to find an explanation what exactly NSF and NSF.DATA files are.

It seems that *NSF is kind of reference and actual data are stored as *NSF.DATA.

My first question would be: is there 1:1 relation between those files?

Because on our TSM server the number of NSF files matches number of NSF.DATA files only for inactive backups, but when talking only about active versions, we have more *NSF then *NSF.DATA files. Is it all right? How can it be explained?

Also we have some very old NSF files, that do not have corresponding NSF.DATA files (at least not of the same backup date)...

So I am bit confused, and would welcome any advice.

Thanks

Issues installing TSM TDP For SQL

I've recently taken over the task of TSM admin at my place of work and I am spearheading the project to migrate us from our old TSM instance (5.5.2?) to a new server that we've had a vendor helping us. So far everything has gone smoothly and I've really enjoyed working on this. Today we started the venture of teaching me how to do TDPSQL and migrating some of our SQL servers to our new TSM environment.

In the process of this I've ran into an issue on two different servers. Both servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I've installed TDP For SQL 6.3.0.0 and am having issues getting it to work. When I launch "DP For SQL Management Console," it does not recognize my SQL installation. I've also noticed that the DP Management Console gets installed, but the actual TDPSQL program never installs. I've tried to install it manually, which worked, but still cannot get the Wizard to recognize my SQL installation.

So on two servers it did not work. I do have another server, also Server 2008 R2 x64 with SQL Server 2008 R2, and it worked perfectly. I am trying to find differences but so far do not see any.

Any/all help would be much appreciated.

How to Manage Backupsets

Hi all,

We run TSM on windows and I was wondering how most of you manage your backupsets that are sent offsite?

Currently, my company uses a lot of backupsets and most of these volumes are in the library. I can check these out no problem, but, I'd like a way to track them so that they return when data is expired. I know DRM won't help with this.

How do most of you manage this? What have you found that works? Any suggestions / scripts would help.

Much appreciated.

Managementclass Question

Hi!

we want to do a filer backup for desaster recovery only. no single file restore or whatever.
Full Backup each Week (sa)
Diff every day (mo-fr)

whould these retentions be ok?
DEFine COpygroup PD_NAS NAS MCB-V10 STANDARD Type=Backup DESTination=NAS-TAPEPOOL VERExists=10 VERDeleted=1 RETExtra=10 RETOnly=10
vere=10, max number of files in backup that exist on filer
verd=1, max number of giles in backup for files that have been deleted on filer
rete=10, max number of days to keep an inaktive version of an existing file
reto=10 , max number of days to keep a file that has been deleted from the server
this would give us the ability to go back 10 days at max, correct?

i read about some installations having different nodes for full and diff!?
does that make any sense?!?

checking in tapes on TS3500 3584 library

$

Hi There

I have problem while checking in tapes on TS3500 3584 library. I asked our experienced Operator to load incoming tapes, while checking in with command " checkin libvol Library-name search=bulk status=scratch labelsource=barcode waitt=0" it found only some not all of them. The Operator has loaded all tapes in the same way. I could see missing tapes on library GUI in the slots like 775, 771 etc assigned to a library. I think for bulk to work they should be in I/O station isn't it ?

Can I remove these missing ones on GUI and then try the same command ?

Should Ops assign to a logical library too when they load if we have more than one logical libraries ?

Thanks in advance

Nahmad

reusing tapes from dead server

$

I have a library sharing environment and TSM 6.3. One of my older, deprecated TSM servers died (database corrupt). This is okay as I no longer need the data that was on it. But I'd like to reuse the tapes that my library manager still shows as being owned by that server. Since the server is dead I can't "delete volume". I think what I need to do is remove those volumes from the volhistory and relabel the tapes. But the undocumented DELETE VOLHIST parameter "volume=VOLNAME" no longer seems to exist in TSM 6. Anyone know how I can force the library manager to reuse these tapes?

Cannot restore data off of tape

Something very odd has happened to one of my tapes. I suspect the problem occurred when TSM lost contact with the library, due to a fiber switch misconfiguration, and had lost control of the library. TSM is now reconnected, and things appear to be back on track, but now I cannot get anything off of the tape.

Whenever I try to do access the media, like a restore, it fails, and the volume is set to "unavailable".
ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume AAB350L4 in drive LTODR1

I can manually set it back to READWRITE, but any further attempts to access it will set it right back to "unavailable"

Things I have tried so far:

1. I ejected the tape, and tried to do a relabel (to fix the header) while bringing it back in:
label libvol ltolib search=b labelsource=barc checkin=pri overwrite=y

And got error:
ANR8816E, Volume AAB350L4 in library LTOLIB cannot be labeled because it is currently defined in a storage pool or in the volume history file.

2. I tried to delete the volhist for this volume using the undocumented commands, and it would not work
DELETE VOLHISTORY todate=today type=remote volume=AAB350L4 force=yes

It fails with:
ANR2404E DELETE VOLHISTORY: Volume AAB350L4 is not available

3. Lastly I tried to Audit the volume:
audit volume aab350l4 fix=yes

And it fails again, right back to:
ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume AAB350L4 in drive LTODR1

I still want the data off of this tape, and have run out of ideas.

Thanks in advance
-Paul

TSM Server with multiple network interfaces

Not sure where this fits... so I put it here.

I have TSM servers with 8 Network Interfaces each. Is there anyway to determine (without going to the client configuration files or TSM server accounting logs), to determine which NIC the client is connecting and backing up to.

filespaces.BACKUP_END -discrepancy

$

Hi,

I have run into a discrepancy in regard to BACKUP_END column in the filespaces table.

In short - it seems that there are newer backups in this filespace than BACKUP_END indicates.

I did:

select * from filespaces where node_name='MYNODE' and filespace_id=8
NODE_NAME: MYNODE
FILESPACE_NAME: /
FILESPACE_ID: 8
BACKUP_START: 2009-08-07 09:30:02.000000
BACKUP_END: 2009-08-07 07:46:48.000000
DELETE_OCCURRED: 2013-04-26 19:23:08.000000
[some not relevant rows deleted]

But look at this query:

select * from backups where node_name='MYNODE' and filespace_id=8 order by backup_date desc

NODE_NAME: MYNODE
FILESPACE_NAME: /
FILESPACE_ID: 8
STATE: ACTIVE_VERSION
TYPE: FILE
HL_NAME: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
LL_NAME: yyyyyyyyyyyyy
OBJECT_ID: 600252210
BACKUP_DATE: 2013-06-27 04:40:32.000000
DEACTIVATE_DATE:
[some rows ommited]

So it seems BACKUP_END is not reliable (for my purposes)? Or it is just not being updated?

I tried to google for some explanation, but it seems this is something not much discussed.

Thanks for any advice.

Backup to TSM volumes on FTP Server (NAS)

$

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at the possibility of placing a copypool on a NAS device, but since it doesn't include the function for NT domain integration, I can't simply mount the share on the Windows server as the NAS share and TSM server don't have a "common" account. So I set up the NAS as a FTP server (w/ anonymous login) and am looking for a way to Backup to FTP server using TSM.

Has anyone of you ever tried this? If so, which device class do you use for the FTP server?

Thx for your answers.

TSM vmware restore

Hello!

Im using TSM proxy for full backup of virtual machines in Vmware 5
TSM Version 6.4

There is no problem restoring to the same Datacenter and different hosts, but how do I do if I want to restore to other VMware machine?
I want to run a restore to a test environment that is a single ESXi server with local storage. In the help it says that you have to enter
Name off the server no problem there
Datacenter the test environment don’t have a datacenter
Host no problem there just ip of the host
Datastore no problem there localstorage.

I get ANS4166E creating a virtual machine, but the datacenter xxxx was not found

Help needed for Fastback workstation - Remote storage disconnected

$

Hi,

We are using Fastback workstation for client V6.1 on Windows XP , and TSM server 6.3 on Windows server 2008 R2 on 2 different public networks.

Both local and remote backup were successfull when we tested within private network, but when we used 2 different public IP's for TSM server and Fastback workstation client, the remote storage shows disconnected.

But I can still see the client node session in TSM server but there is no data being backed up, received data is only in KB

Pop-up Warning message on the tray says - "The system cannot reach the network target. This is likely a transient condition, will wait and retry automatically".....

Can someone please help us to solve the issue.

Rebalancing TSM Database Issues

$

Hello, we are looking for assistance trying to reconfigure our TSM database filesystem sizes. We have 7 database filesystems in total. The problem is that the last 2 are larger than the other 5 due to a previous issue. We have done a rebalance/reduce to the filesystems which worked fine and now we want to bring them all to a more balanced size. Our issue is that the "chfs" command is not allowing us to reduce the 2 larger filesystems.

Here are our current filesysteme sizes for the tsm16 database.
# df -g |grep tsm16
/dev/tsm16pkglv 25.00 11.64 54% 10 1% /tsm/tsm16pkg

Here are the results and error when we try the chfs command with the minus option in it. We get the same result when we use "size=180G" also.
