First attempt at installing TSM Fastback 6.1.3, on a 64-bit Window 2008 R2 machine.
Ran the setup, all completed.
Trying to add a repository, but when I right mouse click the "Repository Pool", the only option available is "Claim Repository".
The other other 2 options are grayed out (Add Repository and Add Repository Wizard). :(
Last year we tried to setup a lab and the previous version was un-installed before installing this newer version. Which is probably not the latest, but this version actually works with Win2008 R2, allegedly.
Thanks for your help.

We are in the process of upgrading TSM4VE to 6.4 (from 6.3) and switching to IF schedules. Planning to do IFFull once Quarterly for our Test VM's. Our existing schedules are doing regular Fulls on 6.3 once monthly based on ESX host and involves multiple dsmcad services on each of our 3 datamovers. Basically, one dsmcad/optfile per ESX host. I end up with about 4-5 dsmcad services per datamover and 70 scheds on the TSM server to make that work.
Along with TSM4VE upgrade, we have a host refresh incoming with fewer and much larger ESX hosts and backing up Fulls based on hosts will not be an option since we won't be able to ingest that much data in the backup window. So, we will be switching to backing up by Datastore. Also, the maxparallel option allows us to reduce the number of datamovers. Using the same methodology with the dsmcad service would be a nightmare since we have approx 70 datastores and we would need one service/optfile per. So, we are looking to move the complexity (which VM's to include) into the schedules on the TSM server and just have 2 dsmcad (IFFull and IFIncr). The IFFull schedule is easy (1 datastore), but IFIncr for the same night has to list the other 69 datastores since you can only exclude by specific VM name, not datastore. I am looking at 140+ schedules in Test alone. If I can't reduce the number of scheds, it would be nice to not push the 512 char limit on the Options parameter of all my IFIncr scheds. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
-Dennis

Hello,
We currently have three storage groups: primary stg NROBOT_DISK on disk, and we write two copies to primary stg ROBOT_TAPE, and secondary copy ROBOT_COPY (hich we send off-line).
Here is how it is defined :
tsm: TSM1>q stg NROBOT_DISK
Storage Device Estimated Pct Pct High Low Next Stora-
Pool Name Class Name Capacity Util Migr Mig Mig ge Pool
Pct Pct
----------- ---------- ---------- ----- ----- ---- --- -----------
NROBOT_DISK NROBOT_FI- 150,000 G 0.3 0.3 90 70 ROBOT_TAPE
ROBOT_TAPE LTO5 913,525 G 58.2 65.5 90 70
ROBOT_COPY LTO5 758,290 G 64.5
In a script, I backup up NROBOT_DISK and ROBOT_TAPE to ROBOT_COPY daily :
backup stg nrobot_disk robot_copy wait=yes
backup stg robot_tape robot_copy wait=yes
Now, in order to conserve tapes, we no longer whish to write to primary copy ROBOT_TAPE, but we would like to keep sending secondary tapes from ROBOT_COPY off-line. Here is what I thought of doing :
1) update stg NROBOT_DISK COPYSTGpools=ROBOT_COPY
2) remove the lines from the backup script
3) delete all volumes in ROBOT_TAPE with discarddata=yes
4) delete stg ROBOT_TAPE
Does this looks correct? No risk of dsmc re-backuping whatever was already in ROBOT_COPY a second time?
Thanks,
Andras

Hi all,
I have to implement api application-managed encryption, and in document specify "The application must set the bEncryptKeyEnabled variable to bTrue in the call to dsmInitEx and set the encryptionPasswordP variable to point to a string with the encryption key password."
I dont understand how to set variable and call function. Anyone could help me, thanks in advance.

Afternoon,
I posted this topic on the Symantec eVault forum but thought I would see if there were others here doing eVault backups using TSM.
Basically I am looking for someone who can share some insight into backup methodology for eVault Indexes.
I tried looking at the best practices guides but couldn't find anything concrete to answer my question.
I'm doing some AIX and Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) consulting for a company and have no previous experience with eVault.
The environment contains a couple of eVault 8.x servers and currently the vaults are using an Incremental forever strategy.
The Indexes however are currently running a nightly FULL backup which even using Lanfree is taking an extremely long time.
What backup strategy are others using for the Indexes? Daily Incremental? Weekly Full? Other?
Also I've seen a number of references to the archive bit.
I noticed there is a script that creates a setarchivetriggerbit.txt file (or something similarly named) in the root of each of the vault drives.
I will look into it a little more but what is the easiest way to verify this?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I am going to restore our production TSM DB on a new server (AIX 6.1) for DR testing. So do I need exactly the same filesystem layout and sizing? Or can I make the filesystems a little smaller? My concern is the archive and active log filesystems - they are huge in PROD but I don't want to dedicate that much space to DR testing. The DB filesystems are identical, but do the log filesystems have to be too? Will TSM know they are "wrong" when it is restored?
Thanks in advance

I try to migrate 1.8TB archive data from our old TSM environment (TSM 5.5) in our new environment (TSM 6.3), with the function "export node". The process starts, it will also create the file spaces, but no single file is transferred. After almost 24 hours I aborted the process.
The data are in the "CASSARCHIV_3592", as can be seen in the screenshot.
I used the command "export node assfirm1 filed=Archive tos=TSM42 replacedef=No merge=Yes enc=AES".
Is there another way to migrate the data or I forgot a parameter?

Hello. I an very new to Tivoli - actually it was dropped in my lap July 1 when the admin left! The system has been in place and working for several years.
The documentation he left was - how to remove a bad tape from the library, how to clean the drive, how to run the report to show what tapes are needed for DR, how to add a scratch tape and move a tape to the off site storage. He did not show me Health Monitor, Activity logs or where to see if the backup jobs actually worked!
I was told to see if there was a tape in the I/O spot in the Dell PowerVault TL4000 Tape Library and if so, follow the procedure to remove. I was supposed to add Scratch tapes when needed.
I got concerned when the report, ran weekly, did not change what tapes are needed for DR. I was also concerned that it did not take any new Scratch tapes. I was told that it sometimes takes weeks to add.
Problem - All backup Jobs fails. The TSM Data volume - 4.58TB is full. My guess it is not sending the data from the disk to the tapes.
I found how to check for Scratch tapes available and used and actually added to one of the storage pools. After that is said it was full.
Looking at the Activity Log of the server I see -
ANR1405W Scratch volume mount request denied - no scratch volume available, ANR1086E Space reclamation is ended for volume 000112L5. There is insufficient space in storage pool. (PROCESS: 883) -
ANR1163W Offsite volume 000028L5 still contains files which could not be moved. (PROCESS: 883) - that tape is actually over in the safe! Why is it looking at that?
Sorry for the length. TSM version 6.2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard edition. Like I mentioned this had been working just fine (as far as I know) for years. These problems only started recently.
If I just deleted the 4.5 TB of files, somehow told it to inventory or just let the jobs run, would I be OK? Thank you. //Bill

I want to start looking into cross site replication with TSM/DD for DR purposes, can some one point me to some good docs on setting this up. My big question is how to setup the DR site that is used for DR, are you just pointing the DR server to the DD/VTL ? what if Boost is being used.
Thanks in advance

Guys
I have an environment of a big oracle database where a striped filesystem is currently in use with rman disk level backups. Due to size of oracle databse and required backup performance DBAs open up to 64 rman channels to write concurrently to all of disks ( around 200) which are part of striped filesystem.
Now we are thinking to move to TDPO, however we do not have 54 tape drives.. Question is that as per rman guidelines we should limit number of rman channels by number of tape drives ( 10 LTO-6) then is there any chance that we can meet current disk based backup performance ? IN other words , would 10 LTO-6 tape drives all together can beat performance of 64 concurrent disk channels ?
Any ideas ? Any TDPO related performance tuning parameters which can help?
Thanks

Hi ,
I have some dubs/Problems with our TSM Infraestructure 5.5.4.0.
-It's possible relaunch a backup from the TSM Server or the Web Interface ? or only can do this on the affected server? The same question with restores , can do the another form or only can do on each server.
-Another thing is that one of my servers in the report appear with the name @17 and in the same report appear the same server in another row with the correct name but with the status Missed and I don't know what is the reason because I reinstalled the TSM Client yesterday afternoon and I reviewed the configuration and all seems to be good.
-We have two server that always appear in the report with the status Pending always are the same servers and I reinstall both Client but continue appear the same status.
-And the biggest incident that I have is with the System State I don't know wich is the form that i can do a backup of the System State of the servers with TSM. On the web interface (Integrated Solution Console) we didn't found the check to activate the System State copy or when I add the paths that I need to copy we don't know the manner to add the System State , please need some help with this problems.
I think so is all :-) thanks you so much in advance

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help with this.
We had some service work done on our library (TS3310) When all was fixed, TSM didn't recognize the library anymore so, i removed all paths, drives and re-added. Everything is good.
However, prior to this, we had two storage agent servers that also accessed this library with no problem. When I try to add the path to these servers, in ISC, , I get an error that multiple paths cannot be defined for a library of this type.
I try though the command line and the error I get is: The Library is in use..
DEFINE PATH <source> TS3310 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY DEVICE=lb6.1.0.4 ONLINE=YES
I'm wondering if we have to vary off the library before doing this? q libr shows that the library is a shared library and this has not changed.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Hello To all,
A long time back I remember that when an admin is removed from the TSM server, any schedules defined or updated
by that admin were removed. Would someone please confirm what impact on TSM admin schedules, scripts, client schedules
etc, will be?
I would like to do some cleanup of my customers TSM environments and one of the area's I want to clean up are the
admin accounts that are no longer in use. Most of my customers are running TSM V6.1 or greater.
Thanks,
Bob...

Hi there all,
I have recently tried out the export node feature. I took a node that I was going to delete anyway, exported it to tape, deleted the node, verified that it was gone, checked out the libvolume, checked back in the libvolume, and then imported the node successfully. Happy with that.
But now the volume that was used for the export is sitting in my library server as a private tape. I'd like to return it to a scratch status, but when I try to do that, it gets denied.
tsm: TSM2500>q libvol ts3500 500232
Session established with server TSM2500: AIX
Server Version 6, Release 3, Level 4.0
Server date/time: 11/11/13 11:41:38 Last access: 11/11/13 10:17:43
Library Name Volume Name Status Owner Last Use Home Device Element Type
------------ ----------- ---------------- ---------- --------- ------- ------
TS3500 500232 Private TSM1500 Export 1,072
I then try to update the volume to make it a scratch.
tsm: TSM2500>update libv ts3500 500232 status=scratch
ANR8443E UPDATE LIBVOLUME: Volume 500232 in library TS3500 cannot be assigned a status of SCRATCH.
ANS8001I Return code 12.
I'm not sure what else needs to be done to make this volume eligible to return to scratch status.
Thank you.

Hi there,
Is there a quick way to see only sessions that run for x amount of hours?
Last night, our recovery log got to 90% full and i'm thinking that it may be due to a session that held on for a very long time. Would be nice if there was a way to see which session was responsible.
Much appreciated.

Hi ll,
I am looking for the script which can checkin the vaultret tapes
But I have one question here
For example if i asked tape ops to bring the 8 vaultret tapes from offsite he sometime misses two and enter 6 tapes in I/) slots.
Now If I try to run move drm * wherest=vaultret tostate=onsiteret than it will delete the entries of two tapes which are not inserted and will loose these tapes.
So looking for the script which scan the I/O slots and tell TSM that these are the tapes which are entered
and run the move drm command

Nikhil
